Transcranial Doppler in Diving : interviewing Dr. Limoni

Specialist in Neurology and Neurosurgery, in 1986 Dr. Paolo Limoni was among the first ones to introduce Transcranial Doppler in Neurosurgery for the monitoring of the Post Subarachnoid Bleeding Vasospasm. From 1995 to 2015 he was Secretary and Treasurer of the Italian NeuroSonology and Cerebral Hemodynamics Society (SINSEC). Currently he collaborates with the Hyperbaric Centre of Ravenna, where he carries out Doppler exams for Divers.

Dr. Limoni will give a speech at the EUBS Congress on September, 13 during the “SINSEC Sister Society” session.

Dr. Limoni, could you explain which areas and specific issues your business is focused on?

As a co-operator of the Hyperbaric Centre of Ravenna, I carry out Transcranial Doppler exams for the research of right shunt, which represent a part of the diagnostic path designed for diving. As a member of the SINSEC Directorate, I am the webmaster of the institutional site and I coordinate the training/certification program in NeuroSonology on the national territory.

What will be the topic of your speech at the EUBS Congress?

I’ll disclose the records of a 6-year cooperation at the Hyperbaric Centre, focusing on the results of the Transcranial Doppler (for the research of right-left shunt) on more than 400 examined individuals.

In your opinion, what are the three factors that have most influenced and changed the sector you are dealing with?

The most important factor that has changed Transcranial Doppler was the substitution of analogue technology with the digital one in the treating of the image obtained thanks to the probe. The second factor was the pairing of the ultrasound technology: besides the Doppler signal coming from the soundproof vase, it is now possible to picture the vase itself. The technological innovations have made NeuroSonology a crucial discipline for the diagnosis and the treatment of every pathological condition that involves arterial and/or venous vases.

We thank Dr. Limoni for his availability and we are looking forward to listening to his intervention at the EUBS Congress 2017!
